What you are looking at
Principal rivers and lake centrelines at 1:110 million from Natural Earth. More useful than it looks on a historical atlas: rivers were the routes, and a trade corridor that appears to wander overland often turns out to be following one.
This record is deliberately short. A context layer takes the minimal-context exemption: it owes a reader its source, its licence and any warning about how it behaves over historical material, and it does not owe the reconstruction and uncertainty sections that belong to a layer making a historical claim.
What to watch for
Modern courses. Rivers move, and several on this map have been canalised, dammed or diverted since the periods the historical layers cover. Treat a close correspondence between a route and a river as suggestive rather than as a measurement.
