What you are looking at

The institutional history of the League as points in space and time: privileges granted, confirmed and restricted; embargoes; conflicts and the peace treaties that ended them; Hansetage; Kontor rules, relocations and closures; and the institutional afterlives that outlasted the League itself.

How to read this layer

This is where a network’s history lives when it has no territory to have a history in. The League’s power was exercised by act - a privilege obtained, a trade suspended, a diet convened - and each of those happened somewhere.

Most of these events are institutional rather than military. Privileges and Hansetage outnumber conflicts, which is itself a finding about how the League worked.

Symbol size follows certainty, so a firmly dated act reads larger than one placed by inference.

Historical scope

1295 to 1764. The end date is deliberate: it reaches past the last Hansetag into the afterlife, because the institutions did not stop existing when the meetings stopped.

Reconstruction and uncertainty

Dating is the uncertainty here, not location - these acts happened in named cities. Where a privilege was negotiated over years and confirmed later, the event takes the date of the act the sources emphasise, and certainty records how firm that is.

Some events are attached to a city because that is where the instrument was issued, which is not always where the thing it describes happened.
