What you are looking at

Fifteen footprints marking where the sheets of the First Military Survey - the Josephinische Landesaufnahme of Transylvania, 1769-1773 - fall across the corpus’s ground.

How to read this layer

This is an evidence layer: it describes a survey, not a landscape. A footprint tells you that a sheet of the survey covers this area, so that if you want to know what the Habsburg surveyors recorded here, there is something to look at.

Each footprint links to the repository that holds the sheet. No scan is served from this site.

1769 to 1773, the survey campaign for Transylvania.

Sources and evidence

The sheets are held by the Kriegsarchiv in Vienna. The index of which sheet covers what is reconstructed from published descriptions of the survey rather than taken from a machine-readable archive index, because no such index was available to this project.

Reconstruction and uncertainty

The footprints are reconstructed. They are approximately where each sheet falls, adequate for finding the right sheet and not adequate for georeferencing anything. A footprint is not a georeference and this layer is not an overlay.

Rights

No scan is redistributed. The rights in the sheets belong to the holding institution, and the link is to the institution’s own copy.
